A Spencers Gifts novelty store in South Portland, Maine is facing the fact that it may soon find itself applying for an adult store licence because of complaints from customers at the local mall. Spencers most widely known for its gag gifts, black lights, and other novelties also has a collection of adult oriented fares usually located in the rear of the store.
After receiving numerous complaints the local city council has decided its best approach is to essentially mandate that only people over the age of 18 can enter the store unless accompanied by an adult. You can read more about this story here.
Whether you agree with it or not I think its a slippery slope. Because local drug stores sell condoms and lubricants that are open for all to see. Additionally if you walk the aisles of Walgreens you will eventually find personal massagers and some of them look eerily similar to bullet style vibrators. So will the city desperate to protect the innocent mandate all stores that sell items intended for sex be restricted to 18 years or older? I think that will kill business especially when these stores, including Spencers, don’t sell a majority of items geared towards adults.
It will be an interesting story to follow and I will update as this surely will go into litigation. Until next time good vibrations.
